North Myrtle Beach was founded more than 30 years ago when the communities of Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive and Cherry Grove united. Each of these communities has its own appeal, as witnessed by generations of vacationers who return to one locale year after year. The city has nearly 11,000 residents and is also home to many fine restaurants and family amusements, as well as Barefoot Landing, a hugely popular shopping, dining and entertainment complex. Of course, you can't describe North Myrtle Beach without mentioning the shag, a dance that originated here and continues to thrive in local dance clubs and at annual shag reunions.

Formed in 1968 from the merger of several beach communities between Cherry Grove and Windy Hill, North Myrtle Beach offers a less frenetic pace than it's neighbor to the south. The ocean front is lined with cottages and condos rather than high-rise hotels. Along 17 is the standard collection of restaurants, miniature golf beachwear and fireworks shops that characterize the highway from North Myrtle Beach 30 miles south to Garden City.

Although about 15 miles separate North Myrtle Beach from Myrtle Beach, you would never know from the street names. They're nearly the same. You could easily end up at the right address, 20 miles away. The lesson is: when you're talking location, make certain you have the right city.
